I used to use it when it was free. Who wants to pay for zip compression anymore? Even windows comes with decompression. I tried zip genious, which I have to say I thought would be a waste of download, is the one I go with now. It does all the compression formats, has more options, doesn't seem to have any problems, and of course is free.

This is a great program and I've used it for many months now in stead of WinRAR, WinZIP and WinACE. It does more formats than ANY of them put together and just WORKS! Great stuff.
BUT...
RAR has moved on these past few weeks...times are a-changing. And all of a sudden, PowerArchiver is no longer able to unpack 80% of things on Usenet. I had to install the latest WinRAR to be able to unpack the new format. Just like yENC and PAR-files, the world of compression is in flux and everyone is busy adapting.
This would have been OK if it was for just a couple of days or weeks, but it is rapidly closing on 6 months now and still no update from PowerArchiver to close the gap.

PowerArchiver is gay, stick to WinAce or WinRAR. WinAce still leads on, with WinRAR following closely, then ZipMagic, and then WinZip.

Hmmm I may have to re-evaluate my use of PA... Although $19.95 is reasonable (it's about $40 in Australia).
It's a smaller file, and looks to be improved quite a bit, but I think I'll stick to the Freeware version 6.11 :)

This program gets raving reviews by everyone, but I've been using it with some 700Mb+ files in ZIP-format and it screws them up everytime and isn't able to recover them with the 'repair'-option. Tested it multiple times, large nero- & ghost-images; failes again and again! Then downloaded WinZip 8 eval (which I hate btw) but it doesn't have this problem! PowerArchiver needs to work on the reliability... Can't afford to lose my data or re-check a new zip every time I create one.

Yep, I agree totally. I've dumped WinAce and WinRAR AND WinZip. This program does it all and has even better contexual menu support than WinZip. Plus, it doesn't ask you if you want to replace an existing file when extracting a multi-file set with EVERY ZIP FILE like WinZip does. Brilliant, though just a little slower than WinZip, but who cares--- worth 5 stars easily.

I installed it on both Win2k and Win98 of my dual boot machine. PA _totally_ replaces Winzip, Winace and Winrar. Multiple extraction is as simple as highlight-drag-click... I found it slightly, I mean very slightly slower than Winzip IN the load up time. But hell it's free and does all things right! 5 out of 5 all the way.
