ICQ is a revolutionary, user-friendly Internet tool that informs you who's on-line at any time and enables you to contact them at will. No longer will you search in vain for friends or associates on the Net. ICQ does the searching for you, alerting you in real time when they log on. The need to conduct a directory search each time you want to communicate with a specific person is eliminated. With ICQ, you can chat, send messages, files and URL's, play games, or just hang out with your fellow 'Netters' while still surfing the Net.

As soon as Trillian comes out with file transfers and voice chat it wil be my messenger of choice. Its nice to log into all programs at the same time ,hopefully the other im,s wont mess with them.

agreed. trillian is nice, i use it from time to time. i love getting connected to every service with one click. but the only service that supports file transfers is irc (which i use heavily anyway) - but even then file transfers aren't very easy at all. sometimes they just will not work. anyway, i hope trill adds in file transfers and another thing that would help: incremental beta test versions. as for the comments about icq being so problematic... this is the first alpha version of the upcoming 2001a - what was anyone really expecting from it? it works as good (if not better) than 2000b - and that surprises me since it is alpha. anyone running this version behind a firewall? or is anyone using port forwarding successfully with 2001a? let me know! typically their alpha versions never offer firewall support. thanks...

you could try to rename your old icq folder to icq2000b and then try to install the new icq2001a again. :)

i haven't tried to skin the new icq. i'm sure icqplus will offer support for the 2001a - it's just a matter of time, as always. in xp, almost every icq dialog uses the current desktop theme. the main icq is the only window that isn't affected by the current theme.

Very good ,dont like the though of re adding the contacts, because some of them take too long to add me , then again that could be a plus.
Oh and can you skin it?Actually 98 was really a great version.

I normally start a new contact list with each new alpha version - I only do this so that I can be 100% certain that my old contact list won't cause incompatibility problems with the new test version. So, I am used to losing the contacts. There is a small list of UIN's I keep track of for friends. I tried to use my old ICQ folder and contacts, but that did was cause illegal operations. So, I opted to let everything go. A friend of mine was able to import ALL of his ICQ 2000b contacts to 2001a with no problems. I guess he never deleted his 2000b folder. I will try this again later, and then I will let it try to convert over to 2001a.
Anyway, I started over from scratch. No big. Why? Cuz starting with ICQ 2001a you will NEVER have to keep local copies of you contacts - the server keeps track of them - just like AIM and MSN. How do I know? Hmm... this is my 3rd install on 3 seperate drives with NO previous install of ICQ - and on the 2nd and 3rd install ICQ automatically grabbed the exact list of contacts from my first installation. By the time I got to the 3rd installation, extra contacts were there from my 2nd install. So, that appears to be working very nicely.
This version has other nice features... remember back in ICQ98 and ICQ99 when they were going to have a built in "File Server"? Well... guess what?!? It's finally here and it's called "Shared Files". Do you like "E-Moticons"? I'm not a huge fan of them personally, but they are available now - even some from the ICQ Chat applet. Ever wanted to highlight a certain line of text? No problem!
So, there is a little give and take here. You might lose a few contacts, but you will gain a newer version of ICQ with some very nice features.

If you remove all the files ,what happens to the db files that contain your contact list?
